Kato is very shy. She was surrendered from a home with NINE children! She was probably constantly screamed at, tugged at, treated roughly, etc., and that is why she is so shy. Mix/Breed: Shih Tzu
Sex/Age/Weight: Male, 10 1/2 years, small
Health: Altered; up to date on shots; requires inexpensive hypothyroid medication daily
History/Personality: Skittles is a sweet, older gentleman who would really love to spend the rest of his life being adored and doted on. He would be the perfect best friend for a senior citizen who is looking for a companion and walking partner -- a wonderful reason to get up and out of bed in the morning. His hypothyroid condition caused him to lose much of his hair when he was not taking his medication. Now that he is taking it regularly, his fur has been growing back in very nicely. He also has some arthritis and some vision and hearing deficiencies. It's no fun growing old - especially without your very own home! Skittles is being fostered in upstate New York. Darling Dana is very good in the car and is quite content to curl up in a passenger seat. She really just needs love and companionship. Ideal placement: Dana would really love a home that is quiet, with a cozy dog bed, lots of belly rubs and daily walks. No children or other dogs. Name: Midnight
Mix/Breed: Labrador Retriever / Chow Chow mix
Sex/Age/Weight: Female, 8 years, large size
Health: Spayed, up to date on shots
History/Personality: Midnight is a very smart 8 1/2 year old chow/lab mix. She is a special needs dog that has not been able to find her 'forever' home. At six months of age, Midnight had a nice home with a man who seemed dedicated to her. She learned to be a real lady, quiet, calm and even learned some tricks. Her life was nice. When she was about 6 1/2 years old, PAL got a call from her owner saying he couldn't keep her anymore because he had to move. Middy's happy, calm life changed over night, and she ended up back with PAL - going to live in a kennel and going to adoptions once a week. The PAL volunteers loved Middy because she was such a well behaved, calm girl. But as time went on, Midnight started becoming stressed from the adoption life which included barking dogs, strangers petting her, riding in a noisy van - basically a lot of commotion that she wasn't used to. As a result of all of this, Midnight's personality changed. She became less tolerant of strangers and sudden movements in her direction. Because of the uncertainty that she must live with every day, she is more withdrawn and not as trusting. When Midnight is comfortable with her situation she is a charm. Midnight is great on a leash, is wonderful in a car, and is very affectionate. She just can't be overwhelmed. She needs someone who will give her the time and space to get adjusted. PAL is looking for an experienced dog owner who is willing to provide Midnight with a safe, loving environment. This person must be willing to spend time with Midnight to secure a bond and build a trust. With the right stimulation, she can once again become the carefree, happy pup she once was.

Names: Camper and Willy
Mix/Breed: Beagle mix, Lab mix
Sex/Age/Weight: Males, 11 years, 38 & 84 lbs.
Health: Neutered. Microchipped. Current Vaccinations. For additional health information, contact the agency listed below.
History/Personality: Poor Camper, he found himself counting the last days of his life with his lifelong buddy Willy. The opportunity to live out his golden years with the only family he's ever known was taken from him because of a divorce. Here's a little bit about them - Camper and Willy arrived at a kill shelter shelter just before closing - their owners have gotten a divorce and decided that neither one of them could take care of the dogs anymore. These dogs adored their "parents" and were so thrilled to come "visit" everyone inside the shelter - until they figured out what was going on. When I took them out (individually), Camper just stood out in the driveway and howled; Willy paced and sniffed everywhere, looking at every passing person, every car. They were both cuddly and latched on to me, but never stopped looking for their people either. When it was time to go back to their pens, they walked in without a fuss and both sat back down in front of their kennel doors, still confused but still smiling. Camper and Willy are 11 years old. Willy is a tall and lean 84lbs. and Camper is a short and squatty 38lbs. Willy is definitely part Lab but maybe some Dane too? Camper to me looks like a Beagle/Lab mix or a Beagle/Spaniel mix, but Beagle is definitely in there some where!! Both are neutered, up to date on their shots, extremely friendly and still very active. These two love people and dance around whenever anyone comes by, but clearly they were very devoted to their owners and are missing them. They were *urgently* in need of rescue, having extremely limited time - that's when Eleventh Hour stepped in. We want to give them a safe and loving home to retire in. They have so much personality and so much love to give...they deserve better than what they have been dealt. They are currently being vetted and will be here soon. When getting picked up from the shelter to be taken to the vets office, Willy was curled up on the cold wet floor in the back of the kennel shaking and shivering, and Camper greeted me at the front of his kennel with tail wagging. As soon as we got them outside they were so excited and ready to romp and play. They do not act like 11 year old dogs- they definitely have pep in their step, and many wonderful years left. It was obvious that they were looking for those horrible people that left them there- whining and looking all around at all of the cars. I told them those people did not deserve their devotion but would soon be with a family that did. Could you be that family? Can you find room in your heart for one or both of these gentle boys?

Ivory is a 6 year old Papillion/long haired Chihuahua mix. She is 7 pounds. Ivory is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. She just had bladder surgery where they removed a large bladder stone. She is all ready for a loving home. Won't you give her a second chance?
Ivory is being fosterd at Rosemarie's home in Fairfield, NJ. Contact Rosemarie at 973-882-8363 or e-mail Rdogsnpups@aol.com
Newark, NJ
Name: Andy
Mix/Breed: Shepherd/Retriever Mix
Sex/Age/Weight: Male, senior, medium size
I.D. number: N15486
Health: Up to date with routine shots, altered and eligible for a gift of the first month of ShelterCare pet insurance paid for by Petfinder.com.
History/Personality: Andy came into the shelter as a stray. His cage card says that he is 10-12 years old. He looked frightened in his kennel, but when we took him out for photos, he was a real doll. He was gentle, and he walked very well on the leash for us. He liked the treats we offered him, and took them very gently from us. He appears to have cataracts in his eyes, but his vision seems fine. This dog really needs a loving home to spend the rest of his life in. Can you open your heart to him?
All pets at this shelter are up-to-date on shots and will be altered and micro-chipped upon adoption.
Adoption Fee: Variable
Agency/Location/Contact info: Newark Shelter. Open 7 days a week from 12pm-5:30pm; for directions call 973-824-7080. Name: Nala
Mix/Breed: Great Dane
Sex/Age/Weight: Female, 7 1/2 years, 120 lbs.
Health: Spayed. Up to date on shots. For additional health information, contact the agency listed below.
History/Personality: She is the SWEETEST girl! She is very delicate on her feet and for having lived in the garage all that time she is VERY good in the house. She knows a few commands...SIT, DOWN, STAY. She likes to get in the crate but we haven't shut the door yet. Nala came to rescue when she was just going into heat. She will be spayed as soon as it can be done since we do not adopt un-neutered dogs. Nala craves attention and has beautiful big brown eyes, and a grey stripe across the bridge of her nose. I think she will be a very good house dog, and a wonderful, loving, adoring companion.
Adoption Fee: $275.00

Name: Cody
Mix/Breed: German Shepherd/Husky mix
Sex/Age/Weight: Male, 5 years
Health:
Neutered, heartworm negative, and up-to-date on his shots.
History/Personality: Cody is a loving dog who adores cuddling. He looks like a purebred German Shepherd (black and cream-colored), although it's been decided that he is a mix. His ears are erect and he has a beautiful face. He is an absolute love bug and adores cuddling. He is a little shy at first, but adjusts quickly to people he meets. He is very calm but loves to play, especially with other dogs. He lived and played with another dog in the past -- his litter mate -- so he would be a great companion to another dog. We recommend a home with a fenced yard. He will be protective of his property. He is housebroken.
