To adopt an older dog
of
a specific breed . . .
Purebred dogs are often listed on the state pages, so be sure to check those first. About 25% of all dogs turned into shelters are purebred. If you don't find the breed for which you're looking, see the listing of Purebred Rescue Groups.
Other ways of finding an older dog to adopt . . .
If you haven't been able to find a nearby shelter or rescue agency on your "State" page, please see our broader list of agencies.

There are a few senior dog rescue groups that are exclusively devoted to finding homes for older dogs. In some cases, these groups may allow out-of-state adoption.

There may be a sanctuary near you. Sanctuaries often have adoptable older dogs in addition to those that they take in for life. Best Friends sanctuary in Kanab, UT, encourages visits from animal lovers and permits out-of-state adoption.

There are a number of groups that match senior dogs with senior citizens. Usually, the minimum age to apply through these organizations is 55. There are many benefits available to seniors adopting seniors, including reduced adoption fees.
