Homer, Alaska, Animal Shelter
Peg Price, a volunteer at Homer Animal Shelter in Homer, Alaska, writes: "Our shelter takes very special note of older dogs and cats that come to us. We volunteers often take them home and, even though we are not a no-kill facility, in my four years of volunteering, I've never known of a senior animal being euthanized. We have a very high adoption rate due to the wonderful, dedicated work of Sherry Bess, who is the director of the shelter and the area's animal control officer. I think we're a very unique shelter due to all the caring volunteers. We literally keep animals for months until we find them a home. Sherry herself often takes home animals with special needs and the older ones." As you might guess, since this organization is located in Alaska, they often take in Siberian Huskies who are being retired from racing.

Homeward Bound Pet Rescue and Referral, Inc.
Homeward Bound Pet Rescue and Referral is an all breed dog rescue in Fairbanks, Alaska that takes in dogs from shelters, private releases and other sources. HBPRR adopts to the best home for the dogs we get and has a wonderful success rate with our adoptions. We have several senior dogs as well as puppies and go from the tiny Chihuahua's up to Mastiffs. Homeward Bound provides each pet with veterinary care as appropriate, all animals are spayed or neutered, updated on their shots, microchipped, dewormed and have a health check before being released for adoption. We are a 501 (3)c non-profit organization and are always glad to accept donations to help us provide the best care for the dogs we take in as our adoption fees do not cover all medical care we provide for our dogs. All our dogs are housed in foster homes to keep them connected to family life instead of kenneled. We do not euthanize dogs based on age and will work hard to correct behavior problems of all animals we get in. We offer post adoption support to ensure the success of every family and pet.

Alaska Dog & Puppy Rescue was originally formed as a Rescue organization to help meet the needs of the Mat-Su Valley and its pet over population problems. The dogs and puppies taken in were literally saved from certain death and ADPR formed to help save their lives. Since its beginning in 2003, ADPR has rescued and placed over 1000 dogs a year. As an all-volunteer organization it hasn't been easy but thanks to hundreds of dedicated and compassionate volunteers ADPR has continued to grow and succeed. We strive to be advocates for dogs in our community and elsewhere and to educate the public on responsible pet ownership. It is our goal to be an asset not only to our rescued dogs and puppies but also to our community.

Because we have already placed them in a home environment, we can tell you about their habits and house manners and whether they get along well with other dogs, cats, and children. Our dogs also have a thorough check up by our veterinarians before being placed and are bathed, groomed and have flea treatments to get them ready for their new home. For more information, please check the Small Dog Rescue website.

We want to educate the San Diego community in general and senior citizens specifically, about the wonderful benefits of adopting a senior mutt*. By doing this we hope to help create a life-time match between a senior dog and his or her new forever family. We feel this is a win-win situation since many amazing senior dogs will have their lives spared and just as many citizens, young and old, will have their lives enhanced by animal companionship. If that wasn't reason enough, there are also many research studies that show the connection between better mental health, improved physical health and having a pet in your life. (* We lovingly refer to all dogs in shelters as "mutts" whether they are purebred or a wonderful mix of breeds.)

Hedgesville Hounds Metropolitan Washington, DC Area. The Hedgesville Hound group was formally established in 2003 as a 501(c)(3) organization comprising people who, combined, have several decades of experience. Together we placed more than 120 wonderful dogs of all ages, breeds and sizes in wonderful homes across the Maryland and D.C. Metropolitan area in 2006. "Hedgesville Hounds" exist everywhere. They are dogs of every breed, every size, and every age who by circumstance, ignorance, or cruelty and neglect, were put at risk. Sometimes they are cats, and even rabbits. Our effort has been quite simple: to give them a voice. And a little help with arrangements. And then let these wonderful creatures do the rest.

Homeless Animal Rescue Team, Northern Virginia/Washington DC
A volunteer from HART writes: "We are a group that prowls the area shelters, accepts owner surrenders, strays, etc., and places every dog eventually. As of October 2000, we had already doubled our 1999 placement of 500 dogs. We accept puppies and very young dogs into our program, but the majority of our dogs are older. We try to take as many as possible from the shelters, as their short time has run out. Like most rescue groups, we struggle to raise enough funds and awareness to get our work done." IOWA

Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center -- "... a city -funded shelter where we try to place the animals who overflow the capacity of the Center with rescue organizations. The Center's Director, Misha Goodman, is wonderful, and the animals here are treated very well. They have medical treatment, grooming and many go to obedience school. The dogs are given two scenic walks a day along the Iowa River by loyal volunteers, indoor kennels with beds and toys, large outdoor kennels, too, on a daily basis, as well as play time with other dogs. Unfortunately, we reach capacity and are a low-kill facility, doing everything we can to place dogs into new homes and failing that, with rescue organizations. We have dogs of all breeds; many appear to be purebred and may appeal to people looking for a particular type of dog, and often many senior dogs looking for a loving friend. We have a great website that shows pictures, stats of each dog, and even some movies of them."

This facility is actually a loving home environment for dogs (usually one, no more than three at a time) who have come from local shelters and who need to find permanent homes. Before arriving, dogs are spayed or neutered, then, after about two weeks of adjusting to home life, are offering for adoption. By that time, the dogs' personalities and habits are known, and a good match can be made between dog and adopter.
